The biggest advantage of opening an account at BrightStar Credit Union is that you can get free checking. I have also found the staff in the Margate branch to be friendly and helpful. However, before you open an account at BrightStar, there are a couple of things you should consider. First, they seem to have a continuous “cash bonus” promotion that goes as follows: If you open an account, keep it for seven months, and make at least four transactions per month, they will add $100 to your account. They say that the money will be added to your account 4-6 weeks after the seven-month period ends. I have not found this promise to be true. I sent them an email two months after the seven-month period had ended, and they did not respond. I waited another week and called their customer service number. This call took up about 20 minutes of my time, and the young lady said that she would put in a request for my $100 to be released. However, she refused to do the same for my wife’s account. She said that my wife would also have to call. When I pointed out that neither of us should have to call in the first place to ask BrightStar to honor their promise, I got nowhere. I have written a complaint to the State Attorney General about this matter. I doubt that I am the first person to be treated in this manner. Second, before you open an account at BrightStar, you should search their website for a list of their bank fees. Some of these fees might surprise you. A few months ago, I had occasion to file some forms at the local Social Security office, and these forms required that my bank account and that of my wife be “verified.” BrightStar charged each of our accounts $20 for the five minutes that it took to “verify” the account, a total of $40. I called BrightStar about this matter and complained that I never agreed to these fees. They said their fee schedule is posted on their website and that I got a copy of it when I opened the account. Apparently, their fee schedule is set in concrete, and they do not make exceptions for low-income seniors.

My husband and I went to open an account at this credit union since we decided not to support mega banks any longer. We went to see the teller and asked a couple of questions about the different account options available. She was extremely rude and refused to provide the information requested. My husband and I went to see the manager whom was even worst than the teller. The manager was very unprofessional and demeaning. We told her we would report her behavior to the regional manager, she got extremely mad and started screaming in front of all the customers present. We would never go back to that credit union, We don’t recommend anybody to go through the hassles we went through.

This place has the worst customer service and the hours are terrible. I have been trying to make payments there for a whole week I cannot get online and the bank is always closed. When you do go in there they are so slow and rude. I am sorry I ever open an account there.

This location has the absolute worst customer service one could ever imagine!!! I waited almost an hour just to make a wire transfer. And 4 hours to receive the funds!! Do yourself a favor, do not and I mean do not open an account there... Steven C.
