My siblings and I checked into this KOA very late (around 2:30am) and chose a spot from the list of available spots that were shown on the list as we were checking in. We set our tent up as quietly as we could and even took our mattresses to the washroom to blow them up to ensure we wouldn’t disturb any campers. At around 10:30am my sister and I left my brother to sleep and were on our way out to get some food before we started taking our tent down and were stopped by an older man with a long white beard telling us that checkout was 10:30 and we needed to pack up and get going. We thought checkout was at 11 like every other KOA we had stayed at along our trip was, however we turned around and woke up our brother and started packing up right away. Around 15 minutes after we had started packing up and taking the poles out of our tent, the owner rolls up in his little golf cart and tells us to start packing. We said “Okay!” and continued packing our things. He then interrupted us again and said, “No you guys need to start packing NOW” to which we replied “We know! What do you think we are doing?”. He then proceeded to spew a bunch of lies to us by trying to tell us that we had taken another person’s campsite, and when we tried to tell him we had taken one from the list of available spots he refused to listen. He then became verbally abusive towards the three of us, calling us a bunch of childish names and swearing at us (keep in mind there were children around this campground at the time). Before he told us to “GET THE F*** OUT NOW” and sped off, he decided to throw a water bottle at me in anger. My brother and sister and I stood there stunned for a moment. We have always been respectful kids and couldn’t figure out why this guy was having a meltdown on us. We finished packing the car, and on our way out stopped at the washroom quickly as none of us had had a chance to use it or brush our teeth yet. The owner and his minion had blocked us from using it and told us we were no longer welcome to use the amenities (even though it doesn’t say ANYWHERE that you are unable to use amenities after checkout time) He then proceeded to verbally abuse us further and call the police on us! We learned he was clearly not mentally stable and left to call the police ourselves. After talking with the police, I felt much better. He assured us we did nothing wrong and did the right thing by calling them because that kind of behaviour is unacceptable. Once we got home from our trip, we ended up looking up reviews for this place on all sorts of different websites and social media apps and realized we weren’t the only ones who had the unfortunate encounter with this crazy man! Some people claimed he was actually drinking on the job, and in a drunken stupor discriminated against “their kind” and refused to serve them. The owner of this campground has some very serious mental issues that need to be addressed. I can honestly say I don’t think this campground will be in business any longer if he doesn’t get the help he needs. A very scary situation to be in with my younger brother and sister. Wouldn’t recommend this place to my worst enemy!

Baffelingly Bad Customer Service. Site looked nice and we checked in without problem. My surge protector indicated a wiring problem - I politely informed the office and things got weird. The first response was to move to a different site which seemed reasonable. Then the owner/manager drove by and told us to leave the campground. No explanation as to why we had to leave. Given it is peak season it was stressful comping up with an alternate place to stay (I made the reservations 3 1/2 months in advance). Suggest camping somewhere that does not wig out over a minor complaint. Update: Contacted KOA and here is their response: Hi Rich, Reservations are handled directly by each independently operated campground. The corporate headquarters is not at liberty to become involved in day-to-day business operations of the individual campgrounds. We apologize for the experience you have described regarding your stay. Please know that this experience is not indicative of the experiences you will have at other KOA campgrounds. Sincerely, Becky KOA Camper Services

Wonderful Park! It’s proximity to Mesa Verde, Anasazi Heritage Center, and Canyons of the Ancients National Park makes this a good place to stay. We had spectacular views of the Mesa. There is a little lake with a one-mile path around it. The bathrooms are a bit older, but very clean and the showers and dressing rooms are spacious. Water pressure was great. The pool was not opened due to the season, but the area was nice, as was the play area for the kiddos. The owners and staff were wonderful. There’s a great “camp” store. Previous reviews mentioned the way motorhomes are “parked”. Instead of the motorhomes heading in the same direction they are opposite. One may face north; the next-door neighbor faces south. The result is that neighbors face each other and share the common area. I could see where that might be uncomfortable. However, the park has so many other positive attributes, it wouldn’t stop us from staying again.

My family prefers to camp in primitive campsites, so my first impression was not positive. Our site had minimal shade; and, as with all organized campgrounds, the sites are extremely close together. I must say, though, the staff here is AMAZING! We had our dogs with the us, and it was very hot during the day. We had tied a tarp to the trees to provide some shade, but the policy is no tarps, as it kills the trees. The owners felt badly for our situation and loaned us their pop-up awning! Their customer service and obvious care for their guests absolutely made our visit. The office team was friendly, pointed out things for us to do that were dog friendly, and stopped to chat to see how our visit was going. I highly recommend this location to anyone looking for a KOA campground.

We are here now and the 3 kids 6, 10 and 15 are loving it. This is our third night, we have walked around the nature walk, used the pool for about a billion hours I think, played on the playground, played pool, rode the bikes, talked to the amazing staff... Everything is neat and clean and we are happy. We are staying in one of the teepees, which is a nice break from the tent we have with us, it comes with two cots and a nice floor mat, a fire pit outside, electricity inside, an extra electrical outlet and a water spigot on the site. The campground is 9 miles from the Mesa Verde entance. We also went to McPhee reservoir and rowed the kayak around for several hours today. It is very close to Super Walmart, City Market and Safeway and the downtown area of Cortez.

My husband and I with our border collie/lab have camped at Cortez KOA twice in the last 3 years. We travel frequently and only stay at KOAs. The Cortez KOA is the jewel of the KOA campgrounds. I know, because I have stayed in over 30 KOAs. Cortez KOA is a jewel because of its quality to keep everything clean and neat. The owners love their campground, they plant flowers and keep it comfortable for the traveler. Next to this KOA is an awesome little lake with wildlife. You will love this campground. It is near the best Indian artifacts in the country. The cute little town also has the best Italian restaurant around.

We stayed here in a tent site over the 4th of July. We loved out stay. Nice size tent site. Very clean facilities. Nice pool. We went mesa verde one day and were at the entrance in minutes. OUTSTANDING staff. We actually watched the fireworks in Cortez from the campground and the staff handed out Popsicles to everyone. We will definitely be back. Great base camp for four corners, the drive around telluride to Durango, the silverton train.

We try to always stay in a KOA campground because of the quality of service they provide. The KOA in Cortez, so far has to be our favorite. Not only are the views beautiful, but they provided excellent information for the area. We especially appreciated the welcome bag with all types of information for our travels. We came in late and they took care of our reservation on the phone and took us to our site promptly.

This KOA is well run and clean. The late check in is fun. The hosts have made a wooden BBQ Grill table for you to fill in the check in registration. I stayed here one night, then stayed at the Far View Lodge in Mesa Verde NP the next night. If I could do it over again, I would have just stayed at this KOA two nights in a row. Great value and good location.

A great place to stay, one night was only $46 for tents with water and electricity hookup. There are clean bathrooms with showers and the laundry room is packed with machines. Furthermore there is a pool and a playground for kids. Everything was tidy and management was sincere. Would stay again.

Super nice owners. Off the road enough to minimize traffic noise. There was a well stocked store. Excellent showers and pool. We stayed two nights in a teepee! A great spot to stay for Mesa Verde about 10 minutes away. Great views from the campground and nature trail. We would stay here again!

Moderate price for a KOA. The sites are large and everything works. Has a small swimming pool. The bathrooms and laundry and clean and modern. They have a nice store in the office area. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The park has scenic views and is very close to Mesa Verde.

Nice, clean and well set out KOA. Staff are very friendly. Pool was a hit with the kids as well. RV sites are nice and spacious. This is our second time to this KOA and it was just as good as our first. Certainly would stay again.

Great location. Love the views, the pool is clean, fantastic dog park and walking path around nearby "lake" (which is more like a pond to those who are used to bigger lakes). Very family friendly.

One of the best KOAs I have stayed at. Friendly staff and the Dog Park is second to none. Gotta hit up the little store at check in. The Chockcherry Lime mixer made the best mule ever!
