I cannot say enough good things about Bill Powers. I know him as a friend, a neighbor and a lawyer. We first used Bill’s legal services when our daughter as a new driver had several “moments of misunderstanding of the law” which resulted in speeding tickets. (For example, it’s OK to speed if you need to pass a big truck or if your team has just won its first conference championship and you are headed to celebrate with teammates etc.) Bill was wonderful! He did not so much as help her get out of the tickets, but more provided a chance for her to understand the laws and to learn from her mistakes without affecting our (her parents) good standing or pocketbook. The consequences proved very effective. It took a lot of lifeguarding hours (this provided some time to contemplate on what she might have done differently) to pay the fines but the fines were for violations that would not doom her driving record. We thought that her experiences had perhaps helped our son, who now at 18 still had a squeaky clean record. Though it probably helped out some, we realized that he was not without error when we received a very surprising notice recently in the mail that “his court date had been set”. After speaking with him, he informed us that as an 18 year old legal adult he had obtained his own lawyer (several months before this) and they had worked everything out and he was to be taking his classes that weekend to help erase the incident from his record. I will have to admit that I was very impressed, enough so that I didn’t even question his not telling us. Of course, he had called our friend Bill Powers who had been an amazing mentor to him during this time. We are extremely grateful to Bill for providing this confidential outlet for our son to obtain ethical and responsible legal advice. There are lawyers that will help you avoid obeying the law or will even help you benefit from an unfortunate situation. I can say that Bill Powers is NOT one of these guys. He is a man full of integrity and compassion and a thorough understanding of and respect for the law. He has helped our young adults understand the law and its implications and has provided honest and straight forward answers and helped to turn the mistakes that they have made into learning experiences with consequences that will not hinder their chances for success in the future. Let’s face it, the laws today are very strict and the consequences of breaking them can be overwhelming. And sometimes, our many (many!) words of warning as parents just fall on deaf ears. If you have a son or daughter who has recently turned 18 and/or is headed off to college WRITE THIS MAN’S NAME AND PHONE NUMBER DOWN AND GIVE IT TO THEM! Better yet, call Bill yourself and schedule an appointment for your new drivers and new adults to sit down with him and have a nice chat about the law, their new responsibilities and the impact that bad decisions could possibly have on their future and yours.

UPDATED REVIEW: I originally left Chris a very poor review for multiple reasons. Mainly, the lack of communication after my judgement was delivered. I had to call repeatedly for multiple weeks to get documentation that I was promised. I got a call from him, directly, the day after I reviewed his firm. He asked what he could do to make it right with me. The only thing I wanted was the documentation that he promised me during his representation of me. Chris delivered later that day. Not only did he deliver on what he said he would do, he also went above and beyond and offered me an additional service for later, should I need it. For those reasons, I am changing my review from one star to four. Chris McCartan laid my options out clearly and let me know what I was up against during his representation of me. I was confident in Chris to handle my case to the best of his ability. Albeit expensive, he helped me receive a favorable outcome. I will refer people to Chris in the future and recommend him for legal defense in Concord, NC.

Powers McCartan should be your first choice when it comes to legal representation. I had the opportunity to have Will Cathcart represent me as I was facing a DUI (.08), Reckless Driving, and a Speeding charge. Will left no stone unturned in arguing my DUI case and he had it dismissed. His knowledge of the law and the circumstance won the case...Matlock style! Will also worked with the DA to have the Reckless Driving dismissed and I only had to plea to the speed. Needless to say, the most embarrassing and fearful moment in my life turned into what will be a few points on my license and an increased insurance premium for a few years. I can live with that. Lesson learned. Will and the Powers McCartan Staff kept me well informed and they were very honest throughout the entire process. This firm was worth every penny and then some. Going with this firm was life altering. I would recommend Powers McCartan to anyone facing legal trouble.

I have known Bill for about 15 years. Several years ago, I had a nasty felony DWI case in Asheville, and had hired a local criminal defense attorney in Buncombe County as co-counsel. He was useless, unfortunately, and he could not believe I was fighting a fourth offense DWI case, which occurred at a DUI checkpoint by a state patrol officer. When I called Bill in Charlotte, to get another referral, he volunteered to come help. The two of us were able to get ALL charges dropped after a pre-trial suppression hearing . I utilized Bill Powers and his firm after my DUI infraction in December 2011. During my initial consultation he immediately made me feel at ease with his knowledge of the law and his confidence in moving forward. Not to mention a great personality. He filled me in on all the ramifications and the process as a whole. I am a realist, and did not expect miracles. But Bill is stickler for procedure and that is what you need in a crises such as this. It took a good year, and the results were more than I could ever anticipate or hope for. I would have paid more had I known the results ahead of time. If you find yourself in a similar situation, trust me, he is your go to lawyer. I learned my lesson and cannot thank Bill enough for his services. Be careful out there.

I have used this firm a few times. Every time they have been great! The ladies in the office were always nice and helpful. A few years ago I got a speeding ticket and they got it dismissed. I also used them when my daughter received her first speeding ticket. It also was dismissed. I have referred this firm to a friend of mine who got a DWI, he was very pleased with his outcome! I disagree with the others on the reviews regarding them over charging. To save my driving record and my daughters I think they were worth every penny. I would use them again! Maybe the guy who has used them 20-23 times for speeding tickets needs to stop driving.

If you have a case with a really bleak outlook I highly recommend contacting Mr. Powers. He strategically utilizes his vast arsenal of legal knowledge to help tip the scale in your favor. Citing my personal case, I went in with very little to no hope in having a positive verdict in my favor, however, in the end Mr. Powers pulled through getting me a full dismissal of all charges. I have been railroaded in my past with lawyers regarding a DUI, so this go around I wanted to make sure I did my research before hiring one and paying. I defiantly picked the right lawyer this time.
