In the Fall of 2014, I thought my student loans were paid off, in full, and applied for graduate school. After being accepted, i received an email that said " According to the National Student Loan Database System (NSLDS), you have 7 defaulted Federal student loans with Debt Management and Collections System as of 11/14/1996. As of now, you are not eligible to utilize Federal financial aid." I was sure that this was a mistake because I had received a message from the payroll department of my employer that I had paid the full amount, per the wage garnishment in June/July of the same year. I called to dispute the claims and followed the steps that were suggested on the government site but instead of my case being closed and reported as "paid in full", I was skillfully persuaded to put my loans into consolidation for what I thought would only be six months, then I would be able to qualify for student loans to attend graduate school. Well, after paying the $5.00 for six months, after I had already paid in excess of nearly $40,000.00 for loans that never should have been defaulted in the first place (I was still a student), I decided that it was time to find an attorney. I had no idea what it would cost and was told time and time again that attorneys will not take on the federal government student loans but after nearly 30 years of payments on the same loans...and feeling as if no matter what I do, I will be paying for these loans until the day I die, I found Van Horn Law Group online. The day I went into the office, I had no job (I had resigned one job to go to grad school and then the next job went into receivership a month after I started), and I was extremely depressed and it was all I could do to get dressed that morning to show up for the appointment. After meeting with Christopher Pabon, I immediately started to receive the relief that i needed to get through the process of not only having my FAFSA corrected, but I am now paying ZERO dollars per month. Christopher has been extremely patient with me, even when I wrote or called him very distressed, and has diligently and faithfully done more to help me than any other person that I have contacted or sought assistance from in the past 20+ years. I learned that when a person disputes their loans or files for a hearing, it is BEST to have an attorney representing you. Someone who has access to a team of professionals and the training and experience needed to cut through all of the legal jargon and what I can only assume is a deliberate attempt to confuse and to scare people into becoming forever indebted to whichever loan service you turned to for help to go to college. If you are like me, and you have not been able to qualify for a loan deferment or are in default, erroneously or not, I highly recommend that you call Van Horn Law Group. I recently had the law firm of Van Horn Law handle a financial case for me. Filing bankruptcy is a nightmare of an experience in itself but the firm handles your case and you with the utmost respect. The office manager Martha goes out of her way to answer your calls and emails even after hours. For help with my student loans, I worked directly with Chad and also with Martha who were easy to talk to, explained everything in real world terms for us "non legal" people and were very quick in response to emails and phone calls. Successfully completed Ch 13 plan with the help of Chad and his team and now moving ahead debt free. Shortly after filing the IRS garnished my wages. I notified Chad and within 24 hours the IRS faxed a release to my employer. About 3 years into the plan, the Trustee saw that I was making more money and wanted to increase my plan payments accordingly. But since any unsecured debts not already in the plan had been stricken during the filing process, my plan payments were not increased.
