There are three types of customers of insurance companies. Many customers simply want a slip of paper to show the police as required, they want that slip of paper to be as cheap as possible and they carry the understanding that if they are involved even in a minor crash they face financial ruin. A number of other customers want peace of mind that if they are involved in a crash they will be able to survive, at least financially the repercussions of the crash. I fit in a much smaller third group, I want the maximum protection and cost of the policy is only a small concern. With this is mind I purchased a Allstate Policy for my motorcycle. At the time I purchased the "gold" plan, since renamed. It includes buying you a new motorcycle should your motorcycle be lost or stolen. I also purchased an additional $3000 in coverage for accessories that I would add to the motorcycle. The motorcycle I purchased was selected with every available option. For three years I happily toured the United States for vacation and took some comfort in the peace of mind that I thought I was buying from Peter Claton, my agent, and Allstate Insurance. On May 28, 2015, disaster struck. I was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash while vacationing in Los Angeles. The motorcycle was a total loss and I was treated at the Emergency Room for serious injuries. I called Peter Claton, my agent, first thing the next morning. He told me to cal the 1-800 claims line. I filed my claim over the phone. I signed up online at the Allstate website to monitor the status of my claim and to receive text message updates. This proved to be a disaster, it was fairly obvious that the motorcycle was a total loss. Luckily the Allstate coverage would include helping me get home. I purchased a one way plane ticket and shipped some luggage home via UPS. Allstate offered to reimburse me for 1/2 the cost of a new helmet (this helmet was two weeks old). Allstate later sent an adjuster to confirm the motorcycle was a total loss. This would be the end of the story if Allstate was willing to help. Sadly this was not the end of the story. Peter Claton, my agent, never called to update me on the status of the claim or to even see if I was OK - I spent two weeks in bed recovering and missed 2 months of work. Allstate decided not to pay for a new motorcycle but instead hired a contractor to find a cheap replacement bike. They came up with a bike the same years as mine with none of the extra options. Allstate also agreed to only pay 1/2 of the $3000 in document accessories that were added to the motorcycle. Allstate abandoned the bike at a garage incurring a daily storage fee. Now two months later I am still paying payments on the bike, still paying payments to Allstate and still incurring a daily storage fee. Allstate even denied the coverage to help me get home. I had to retain an attorney to make Allstate do what they promised to do. I will update this review if Allstate is able to do anything that they promised to do. In the meantime - avoid Allstate at all costs. UPDATE: I did receive a partial settlement 68 days later so I could stop making payments on the totaled motorcycle.
