If you are like me, and you never expected to be starting the chapter of your “family” life as a single parent, then you need to speak to Colleen. I had a nightmare scenario unfold out of what should have otherwise been a straightforward paternity case. The mother of my unborn child took some advice from trusted sources to retain an attorney (NOTE: paternity-law attorneys do not exist, ADVERSARIAL “family law” lawyers do). He straightaway convinced her to retain him, saying that she would never have to pay a penny for his service because the court make ME pay for him to represent her, and he made her feel like she would be putting her unborn child’s life in danger if she didn’t! I had no attorney on retainer and we had already come to a very healthy child support arrangement. He then immediately did three things; he subpoena’d me, documentation from me that I had already provided in full about my finances, & he served me with papers stating “YOU ARE BEING SUED” FOR HIS $10,000 RETAINER! He then convinced her that she should receive 2x’s as much money as we had agreed to,that I was just trying to take advantage of her, & making her believe she should never have to work again!! There is ton more that this attorney did, because nothing makes them money like a bitter, long, protracted court battle but she finally agreed to fire him. I still had to spend several thousand dollars defending myself against his lawsuit! My baby-mamma was still convinced she should be getting more money from me thanks to this attorney (and what I was giving her was actually more than would later be court ordered!), so we proceeded with finding a mediator. THIS TOO WAS A TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE… We found a husband and wife mediation team who had been married for forty plus years to help us mediate our paternity case. While mediation conceptually is the best for both parties, I learned the hard way that having a bad mediator that is unfamiliar with this nuanced side of family law is nearly as painful, and in fact was more expensive, than the trial by fire we had with the adversarial divorce attorney she hired to “protect” her. We spent hours with this couple who did not themselves understand custody law, how to interpret my basic W-2 earnings, or how that should factor into the child support calculator. After spending $7,000.00, we lost faith in their ability to broker an Agreement for us. We were then thankfully referred to Colleen. I will admit that I was very apprehensive in trying mediation again after the last experience, but it was immediately obvious that Colleen takes a deep interest in the needs of both parties and understands how emotional these conversations can get. Not only is she intuitive in that regard, but she also knows what she is doing. She made figuring out child support straight forward and simple. She helped us problem solve when my baby-mamma and I disagreed on things, and she helped us create a Parenting Plan that worked well for both of us. Colleen even brought up things to consider that we hadn’t even thought of because she wanted us to have as comprehensive of an Agreement as possible so we wouldn’t be in and out of court for the rest of our daughter’s childhood. Working with her was a COMPLETELY different experience than the mediators we had first worked with. Colleen will help make sure both parties not only understand what they will gain from retaining her, but also, what the flip side of that coin looks like, which is great knowledge if things get so tense that one party postures to walk away from the negotiation. You need an expert like Colleen who truly cares to help you get through this time…we learned the hard way that not all mediators have the experience, knowledge, skill, and compassion that Colleen does. You need help navigating the law and someone that both of you can trust…and we have that in Colleen…I can only hope you’ve found her before any of my previous experiences happened to you.

WOW !! We are so fortunate we found Colleen. After going through two sets of attorneys and being told our divorce was going to take at least two years because of how complicated it was. Our friend told us about Colleen and we both agreed to give her a shot. (personally I had no confidence in a mediator. I absolutely believed it would fail !!) Boy was I wrong !!
