If you have Type 1 Diabetes I would choose another insurance. Unity does nothing for prevention of long term problems, they deny access to Continuous Glucose Monitors, they are the only insurance plan that makes you submit blood sugars in order to be approved for diabetic supplies. Do they think the diabetes is going to go away? Very frustrating, and I have had the same negative experience with Chartwell and Edgepark, that other reviews have referred to. Along with being very rude and difficult to contact, it took almost 2 months for the communication between all of the different parties for me to get my diabetic supplies, UNEXCEPTABLE in this day and age. I listen to the commercials and laugh, yes you have access to these great doctors, but then you have to wait 3 months to get in to see the doctor only to have Unity deny the treatment coverage. Living with Diabetes is hard enough, there are so many advancements that have made life with diabetes easier, but Unity does not allow access to them.

We have been using Unity for the last decade, and overall have had a positive experience. Within the last few years they have contracted with Chartwell who handles my diabetes medical supplies. Chartwell then uses Edgepark to deliver those supplies. There is a fatal disconnect in this process and either company or more likely both are incompetent, rude, disinterested and negligent. It is hard enough to be diabetic, yet they add layers so every order is a multiple agency, multiple phone call, multiple authorization, multiple week nightmare. Everyone you talk to knows nothing, blames someone else and has no idea how to help you. Prior to Chartwell and Edgepark, I would have had nothing but positive things to say about Unity. As it sits, my wife and I are talking about other options. As long as Unity continues to use these horrible subcontractors I can not recommend them.

According to Unity, special pediatric contacts for a 5 year old (to replace an eye lens that was removed due to cataracts) are not a "medical necessity". In other words, it is not a medical necessity for a 5 year old to see (and have his/her brain develop properly). This is incomprehensible to our Doctors, and against the the recommendations of the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. Despite multiple appeal attempts Unity stands firm. Clearly, they need their profits. Thankfully, other insurance providers are more helpful (see Blue Cross Blue Shield).

We had another provider that was good to us when I had my gallbladder out and other needs. When my employer switched to Unity because of lower cost but same coverage my wife thought we should pay the difference to stay with the same provider because of the good service from them. I switched to Unity and we had very little heath needs for a few years. Now that has turned around and we have had a lot of usage lately and Unity has helped us a lot in taking care of the costs and understanding our problems.

Billing department is terrible!!!! They dropped my policy because they never sent me a bill... I had called them and corrected them 3 times to get my bill sent to right place - they never fixed the problem! Needless to say I switched companies. Best thing I ever did!
