I am currently the legal guardian of a sibling who has a psychiatric history. The push for guardianship was not only to secure a safety net of services such as access to vocational rehabilitation, disability pay and medical insurance so that my sibling can function at his very best and have access to acute care when it becomes necessary but, also to promote the necessary communication between all professionals in supportive services accessed. I had no prior knowledge of the guardianship process and I was referred to this particular law firm by a co member of the Portland Family to Family support group. Though there was much emotion and family turmoil involved in this process, my attorney and her staff were always very clear and concise in communicating what documentation and support was necessary to secure guardianship in a timely manner. They recommended the least restrictive form of guardianship necessary to allow preservation of integrity and promotion of autonomy. I have had the pleasure of working with Tim Nay and his knowledgeable and caring staff since 2000 when our family’s world was devastated by my husband’s sudden, traumatic brain injury. Since then, Tim and his staff have helped our family with countless issues and drafted myriad documents to ensure that we are both provided for now and protected in the future. Perhaps as important to us as their expertise, these folks have become our friends and supporters. Although the days have often been dark and time has brought with it many unwelcome changes, Tim, Jackie, Sandy, Lois, and others have gone through it all with us. And, in our brighter moments, they’ve been our biggest cheerleaders! It brings tears to my eyes to think of the friendship that’s been forged these past 12 years. Out of tragedy no less! So glad we finally started this process and we found a N+F to help us as well. We met with Sam, who with incredible pace and patience, walked us through all of the details and definitions of how a living trust works and all the things we would want to consider as we cement our final wishes. Going into this, I thought it would be incredibly intimidating and complex but it was surprising direct - not because it is - but because of the way Sam was able to explain things in a way it was easy to get. And I should mention that in addition to Sam, everyone there was incredibly kind and helpful as my wife and I set up our living trust. So after years (yes, years) of putting this off, we finally have the peace of mind of a trust. And not just because of some paper but because these people helped give us some confidence in the process as well. So lucky we were referred here!
