Sometime last Fall, the water line between the water meter and the building in which I rent an apartment sprung a leak. The leak was in the thirty feet or so between the meter and the building. I had no idea there was a problem until I received a notice that $160 had been transferred from my checking account to the City of Boynton Beach Water Utilities. My bill averages about $50/month so that is what I budgeted. $110 extra is more that I can handle since I am retired and on a very small fixed income. That pretty much eliminated more than half my food budget for the month. Once I reported the situation to my landlord they fixed the leak the same day. I called the City and they said that if I brought in an invoice that showed the leak repaired, they would adjust my bill to its typical amount. On Dec. 29th I took all the paperwork to City Hall and explained everything to the receptionist. She said I should hear from the city within a month about the adjustment. On Feb 9th I got an invoice from the City Water Utility for $328.53. The additional amount is because the leak had gone undetected for several months. At the end of February I had not heard anything about the adjustment. I have been paying the actual usage amount due each month so the city does not shut off my water. The city will not let me cancel my automatic withdrawal account as long as I owe them money. Therefore, I paid my credit union $30 to block transfers to the City of Boynton Beach. When I next called the Water department they said that there had been an adjustment made to my account and that it all zeroed out. Today I got my monthly water bill and they still show me oweing them $185. The “adjustment” was for $162, not the $321 I expected. Not only that, but the city tried to withdraw the $108 from my checking account and my credit union blocked it. Therefore, the city charged me $25 for a returned bank draft. I received no notice that the city was going to try to transfer funds from my account between billing periods. As I said, I have been paying the current amount due each month since this process started and the city had no reason to try to withdraw funds from my account between billing periods. Municipal thievery is not limited to Ferguson, Missouri. Is this typical of the City of Boynton Beach Water Utilities Department? How can I get this mess resolved without getting additional charges or my service cut off? Clearly, they have the upper hand. If I make too much fuss, they will shut off my water and bill me an extra $40 to reconnect. My strong advice would be to anyone considering automatic withdrawal of your water bill, to reconsider. Once the city gets your money you will never see it again. If you are on autopay now, on one of the few days per month that you are allowed to cancel, kill that service. I am going to have to close my account at the credit union and establish a new account to prevent the City of Boynton Beach from robbing me any further. Throughout this, I have done nothing wrong. I rent an apartment in a building belonging to someone else. So far, this process has cost me over $140 of my own money and the City still claims I owe them $184. This is money out of my pocket for something that was not my doing and not my fault. I have made numerous phone calls and three trips to City Hall to try to resolve this matter, all to no avail. At the end of the month after I pay all my bills and pay for supplies, I have only a very few dollars left in my account. There is no way I can afford to have a heavy handed government department rob me of what little money I have left.

I bought an occupied property in June 2015. People were renting this property since Nov. 2013. Once renters moved out and I went to the city of Boynton beach water utility office to transfer the water service in my name, gets surprised, they were asking me $2650.00 past due balance to turned the water on. They provided me the Bill which shows a monthly charges of $40/mnth not been paid from 2009 to 2013 (almost 5-years, no one was living there). Home owners association foreclosed this property in Oct. 2013 and rented out this property till Feb. 2015 and there was no issues of water bill or disconnection notice of unpaid previous balance during that period of time (Sept. 2013 to Aug. 2015) and city of Boynton beach water department never asked the previous balance from new owner(HOA) which was generated from 2009 to Sept. 2013 and never turned off water for them. Till now (Jan. 27th 2016) since June 2015 I have no water (last 7 months). Even though I paid $100 deposit and fill out utility application. . What do you think ? what can you say? If someone knows where should I go for justice please let me know because I tiered of everything finding attorneys to settle this matter with the city of Boynton beach water Utility.

I received a red light ticket in the mail after it was due, I called the city and told them I would pay for the ticket but asked if there was anyway I could have a late fee waived since the first time receiving any notification was incredibly delayed. The woman told me I could take it to court. I laughed at her bc we all know how that would go. Totally unfair and such a scam.
