I truly lived the famous words of conservation author Terry Tempest Williams, "A place of inspiration, imagination, and transformation. It remains a refuge of the American Spirit". Seeing all those buffalo, prairie dogs, wild turkey, wild horses, and elk took me back to the time when Theodore Roosevelt lived here. I visited this great prairie haven during The Great Centennial, a time of discovery and rediscovery. A time of leaving behind a civilized life; the stress and pettiness of urban crowds, neighbor cheeting neighbor, and all its lies and hypocrisy; to a life back in time of great beauty, simplicity, sweet harmony, and unity with man and beast alike. I dream of prairies and pines where the buffalo still roam and the deer and the antelope still play.

This National Park is amazing, a true Western experience. The park offers great hiking opportunities with views of wildlife like bison, mountain goats, wild horses and prairie dogs. The park has three units that are connect by a trail for horses or mountain bikes. The southern unit is the more accessible so there are many more visitors there. The back country areas are rugged and the trails are not well marked, but those who traverse into the back country will be amazed by one of the most wild and in touched parts of the nation. This park is as impressive in terms of raw beauty as Glacier or Yellowstone but without the hordes of annoying visitors trying put bison in their car. This part is a must see, it has car camping and charges and entrance fee.

Plenty of scenery ... if you are already there, you can also take this park with you. Certainly you could also hike there and have a good time, but as a European round trip tourist you are naturally looking for the spectacular highlights. I have not found any. And the dear animals have not shown themselves either. THANK YOU. Time required: 2 hours

Often passed over, this park is one of my favorites. It has splendid desolation and scenery coupled with history. This is where Theodore Roosevelt retreated to after his first wife died after childbirth. He lived here and ranched and built a cabin for himself and some friends in the middle of all these beautiful badlands. Make sure to see his artifacts at the visitor center in Medora. Cottonwood campground can fill up by late afternoon, you may have to stay outside the park. Make sure to visit the Petrified forest too, it is work the walk!

My daughter and I camped one night in the North Unit, and we had a great time. We woke in the middle of the night and stayed up for about an hour watching the stars--we brought a telescope for just that reason. While exploring the next morning, we learned just how stealthy a bison can be, as one managed to sneak in front of our car. Fortunately we were able to back away quickly before taking a few quick photos. The rangers were very helpful and friendly, and my daughter enjoyed the Junior Ranger program.

On a chilly morning, photographer Susan Taylor waited more than an hour to capture the perfect pastel sunrise at Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota. “It’s been my mission and passion to support and photograph America’s parks and public lands since I was young teen,” Susan said. The park honors President Theodore Roosevelt, who fell in love with the rugged landscape of grasslands, forests and rivers and started a cattle ranch at Elkhorn Ranch, which you can still visit today.

We were only here a short tlme but loved it! We backpacked the petrified forest loop, and set up camp in the back country. The petrified forest was amazing. It felt like you were transported back in time. The panoramic views from the plateau were breathtaking. The wind on the trail is constant, and can cool things down quite a bit, so plan accordingly. The wind also dries you out, so bring plenty of water and maybe some glasses to shield your eyes.

This is a great place to stop by on a road trip or even a destination place. Although a smaller park, it has a lot to offer from many many hikes, the painted canyons, and amazing wildlife. There are all levels of hikes that make the park very accesible. The loop in the southern portion is beautiful and a great option for any group. Stayed at the cottonwood campground and loved our campsite.

A must see place. Stopped with my parents in 2016 & spent a couple of hours driving & stopping for short hikes. Lots of animals to see that are free roaming. My father said it was one of the best parks in this area because he actually felt like he was standing in & on top of the Badlands (because you are) & not like others where you are on the outskirts looking in.

One of the least magnificent parks but a significant part of one of the top 10 presidents of the United States life. Should be a National Monument and not a National Park. There are no rest rooms outside the main park area on the North Unit...14 mile several hours if you do short hikes and look at Vista. So take some tp with you. Same deal at South unit.

Beautiful park, loved the black ash trees and nice campsites. We got some wonderful shots of the wildlife, buffalo and big-horn sheep rutting. Lovely hikes, very historic locations. The only negative comment is all the local fracking. So much heavy equipment on roads leading to the park. The fracking sites view-able from the park are disappointing.

Under appreciated park, gorgeous badlands, and miles to hike. The scenic loop is good for a full day of overlooks and short walks. Visit the northern unit an hour away. A ridiculous amount of bison and hundreds of prairie dogs in the southern unit! Saw maybe 20 cars all day in the park in the middle of summer. Everyone needs to visit this park.

The north unit is beautiful and the staff was friendly and helpful. Would have given 5 stars if the trail markers had been readable. The markers look either UV bleached or worn out because the bison are using them for scratching posts. Anyway the scenery is beautiful and the bison are impressive A visit here is well worth the time.

Excellent National Park. On my first visit here there was a wild buffalo right at the entrance, it was in April of 2012, so the scenery was a bit dead, and the weather not very pleasant, but seeing the buffalo, and getting some great photos was well worth it. Similar landscapes to the badlands, just a bit more sprawling and vast.

beautiful scenery. It was hot and we could not walk it well. We must return. The visitor center is very nice and the Rangers were very friendly.

Awesome! Lots of bison, mule deer, horses, prairie dogs. Dramatic, jaw dropping landscape! Took short hike thru the prairie dog town and came around the corner to come face to face with a bison laying down ten feet away. Backed up and half way back we had six young male horses come trotting pass. Amazing!!

I had the best one-day experience in a national park. Saw tons of wildlife: bison, prairie dogs, wild horses, bird life...etc. Lots of good hiking add well, and a stunning landscape. We only made it to the southern unit, but would love to go back to the northern unit someday.

Visited both North and South units. Both are spectacular but the South unit is naturally busier because of its vicinity to Medora. Try to go early or late afternoon as the light is more mellow, the crowd is even less and the wildlife is more active. Do take time to explore.

The Grand Canyon of North Dakota. We have seen both the North Unit and South Unit of the Park. Also the Painted Canyon scenic view near Medora. The last stop we made at the Painted Canyon scenic view stop a thunderstorm was coming in from Montana. Quite impressive sight.

Great scenery. Saw bison and tons of prairie dogs. Great trails to hike! The ticks are horrible this year so I stayed away from the grassy trails but there are some asphalt trails to hike. We came in from Medora which is a wonderful place to visit-never a dull moment!

Loved the natural beauty. We had sightings of buffalo, prairie dogs, mule deer, and wild horses. The locals are friendly and the town has a lot to offer. You can have a meal or stop off for some ice cream. They even have theater. A true treasure of a little town.

So glad I made the trip to this park. Somewhat like Badlands National Park, but much more vegetation, cottonwood trees by the river. Lots of great hiking trails of varying difficulty. Not crowded at all in mid-September. North Unit definitely worth the drive.

I stopped at the Painted Canyon rest area/visitor center. Absolutely stop here if you are short on time but still want a fantastic view. Absolutely stunning for a free National Park experience, they even have park rangers there if you have any questions

This park initially seemed like one of the also-rans among national parks, but after visiting it once it racks among my favorite. There seem to be more bison than Yellowstone, the prairie dog towns were amazing, and the wild horses were beautiful.

This is a great park to visit for spotting wildlife and to see a unique landscape. Prairie dogs abound, as do bison and wild horses. There are fewer hikes than at other parks, but they are well-labeled and contain numerous interpretive signs.

Not as busy as most National Parks (I like it better that way). Great trails. Medora is cool. Mah Dah Hey trail is one of the best in the country! Definently check out the North Unit as well. Great views and Fun time. I go 2-3 times a year.

The Wonder of nature. The animals are so abundant you have to try to avoid them driving through the park. There are all kinds of hiking and horse trials with good parking and knowledgeable staff to help you find what you are looking for.

Always visible from the entrance, standing wildlife bison herd stands bustle through the road and there is a charming view points, respectively

Long Ago, this was probably great, but now with the Oil boom that is around it is that pretty here. Wildlife has also vanished. There is not a lot to see in ND, this is the only thing they have and feels like it is going downhill fast.

We loved this park. Not only was it beautiful, but there were many fun trails and much wildlife. We saw buffalo, prairie dogs and wild horses. Our kids absolutely loves it. Take the side roads to off road trails, they are worth it.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park has a north and a south unit. Both are excellent places to view Bison. It was a little unnerving, but a unique experience, to have a herd of over 100 visit our campground in the north unit.

Beautiful park, my son loved it too. We saw a lot of wildlife: bison, deer, wild horses, prairie dogs, a big snake, and a badger. We entered the park at medora, and the loop took about 2.5 hours with the stops and walks.

A very pretty National Park. Nice campground. My kids enjoyed the events that the Park Ranger had going at night. Cool things to do outside the entrance to the park also. Family and I plan on returning next summer.

The park is beautiful. Most people go to the south park but you are missing some amazing scenery if you miss the North park. The trails are very good. The descriptions of the difficulty of the trails are accurate.

I went there in summer and stayed two nights camping off the road (not in a camp site). The scene is gorgeous and the night sky is filled with stars. The sky is so dark that the milky way stands out so clearly!

Great place to visit! The scenic sites are breathtaking. The buffalo herds were fun to see as well as the beautiful wild horses. We just visited the middle of June this year (2017). The weather was perfect.
